Expressions – Impressions
The show ran from March 21 to May 2, 2010 and was showcased in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record newspaper Arts Section. The paintings presented "portraits" of people in their natural setting - women from developing countries who populate the open market places , buying and selling goods. The faces of these subjects provide an unlimited range of expression - their appearance, emotions, shaped by the effects of their experience, and combined with the colourful fabrics and designs of their everyday clothing -- a rich and endless source of interest for the artist. For every Expression in the face of the subject, there may be an Impression formed in the mind of the viewer -- a dialogue is created between painting and viewer.
The paintings are not "portraits" in the usual sense - the subjects are not posing for the painting, nor am I compelled to create a true likeness of the subject - I am striving simply for an interesting composition, colourful in appearance and character, and in some way to convey or create expression in the painting.
References for many of the paintings come from frequent trips to the souks of the Middle East and Africa, and the markets of South America and Mexico.
